Shared Area @ BETT UK

We visited the Biggest Educational Technology Event in the UK to talk about the Role of AI and the Mission of Shared Area

About SharedArea

My name is Peter, founding trustee of Shared Area. But what is SharedArea? What is the Mission of SharedArea? Who is it for?

Many of us struggle with education. It can be an unseen battle for many reasons. I am Dyslexic. I am ADHD and I am possibly many other things. But it's not about particular ability, it’s about diversity.

I often think of the quote attributed to Einstein:

"If you Judge a fish by it's ability to climb a tree..."

There are 200,000 secondary school teachers in just England alone!

If each one shared just one lesson. Their best lesson. We would have 200,000 teaching videos to learn from. That would be over 400 videos for every learning outcome for 10 GCSE's!

Just imagine the number of different styles of teaching that would be captured.

The videos would be sorted by Subject, Topic and Sub-topic alone. Not by misleading clickbait titles and paid for promotion. The videos will then be filterable by using tags to find the content that resonates with you.

Tags like, animated, chalk and talk, demonstration, funny, exciting, practical, etc etc etc.

There are so very many ways to teach. And every year teaching is lost. We could quite literally save education for all of humanity, for all of time. There is no need for the videos to disappear after  6 months or to put them behind subscriptions. Available to everyone, forever!

If each teacher spent just another hour, watching 10 other teacher’s lessons, they could themselves use it as “Continual Professional Development”(CPD). But more than that, they could verify that content is Correct, Accurate, set at the right level, and more importantly, that they are safe. Free from misinformation, free from abuse and free from offensive material.  AI cannot verify content. We need real humans. Real Human Intelligence(Hi).

Schools could allow SharedArea to be available in classrooms without fear of the unsafe content. With no adverts, no clickbait titles, no pay-walls, no need to log in and share personal information,  IT teams could easily allow this thought the firewalls, whilst blocking other platforms that do not hold the same values. Shared area works under the values and principles set out by the UK Charities Trust.

We will always need schools, colleges and universities. But we should also have a Library of the Future. A safe space where everyone, including the teachers, can go to learn and be inspired.

Shared Area. What the internet was meant for!

Safe spaces are important!

Fact is important.

Learning is essential.

Imagine a world..

...A world where education is free.
